Small Living Journal Issue 3 – Now Online
Issue 3 of the Small Living Journal was just released. The theme of the issue is “Where We Live” and it consists of a series home tours of where the regular writers in the journal currently live.
What I particularly like about this issue is the range of different solutions you see amongst the writers. Our houses range from 110 square feet on the low end (Greg Johnson) to 1,800 on the high (Michael Janzen). We also have everything from a Tumbleweed Tiny house, to a floating home, to an apartment in the city, to a regular house in the suburbs. I think that what you take away from this issue is what consistutes “small” and what is the appropriate solution for one’s own needs is highly individualistic, but that each of the writers has given quite a bit of thought to their choice. And, at the heart of things, I think that is what the small home movement is all about.

Steph,
Just wanted to write in to say how much I loved your article in SLJ. I woke up this morning so dispirited, mostly because every single person we’ve told about our plan to sell our house and move into a small shipping container home thinks we’re completely crazy. This includes our families (my family is currently not speaking to me over this!).
Anyway, I just felt low, and sat down this morning and the latest issue of SLJ was in my inbox. And there was your article.
And it made me so happy! It reminded me that our hearts really do know best, in spite of what everyone else is thinking and saying, and it really brought to light, again, why we’re doing this.
Thanks for the perfect article at the perfect moment!
Heather, I’m sorry you’re having to go through this. You and your husband have chosen to do something that is radically outside the American norm. That can make it hard for others to wrap their mind around and for those that are close to you even a little scary. If you’d like a sympathetic ear you’re more than welcome to shoot me an email.
For what it’s worth, I think my family struggled with my decision to move where I have, as well. I’m not sure my father understands even now.
Thanks for the comment on the article.
Steph
